Day 75 - Monday 8 July

We started the day by looking at some of Amarillo's Route 66 sights.

 

Next stop was the Cadillac Ranch, just west of Amarillo.

 

Then the Magnolia Gas Station, in Vega (Texas).

 

The flatness of Texas continues.

 

 

We had lunch at the Mid Point Café, in Adrian (Texas).

The scenery in New Mexico is spectacular.



 

 

 



 

We arrive in Santa Fe late afternoon, and are welcomed by a free country music show in the Plaza.

 

 

We have dinner at the - http://thunderbirdsantafe.com/ , which overlooks the Plaza.

 

 

 

Day 74 - Sunday 7 July

A very long driving day (500+ miles), from San Antonio, north west to Amarillo (Texas), where we rejoined Route 66. As distinct from the drive south, which was all freeways and spaghetti jungles, with shopping malls, hotels and restaurants by the side, this drive was on smaller freeways, with thousands of overhead power towers, wind turbines, oil derricks, and vast open spaces.

We visited the Buddy Hall Center in Lubbock - http://www.mylubbock.us/departmental-websites/departments/buddy-holly-center/home , and dined at Route 66's legendary- http://bigtexan.com/ , in Amarillo.

  

 

Day 73 - Saturday 6 July

A leisurely day in San Antonio, including a river boat ride and dinner at - http://www.thehotelcontessa.com/las_ramblas/ on the River Walk.

Day 72 - Friday 5 July

Leisurely day during which we drove south from Austin to San Antonio (Texas). In the afternoon we visited the Alamo - http://www.thealamo.org/main/index.php .

Day 71 - Thursday 4 July

(USA Independence Day)

We spent the day travelling around downtown Austin, looking at many of their attractions, including the LBJ Library and the State Capitol Building. We had lunch at Whole Foods flagship store, dinner at a great Mexican restaurant - http://benjiscantina.com/, then watched the fireworks from a bridge over the Lady Bird Lake (Colorado River).
