This morning we drove south east to the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, which memorialises one of the last armed efforts of the Northern Plains Indians to preserve their ancestral way of life - on 25 & 26 June 1876, the US 7th Cavalry battled unsuccessfully against the Lakota and Cheyenne forces. On Last Stand Hill there is an Indian Memorial and a 7th Cavalry Memorial - the most famous casualty being Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer. We attended an interesting film documentary, and an excellent presentation by Steve, the Park Ranger, walked up to Last Stand Hill and drove along Battlefield Road.
We then drove hours east, fortunately staying in front of a severe thunderstorm, before safely arriving in Hill City South Dakota (the 46th US state we've been to - the countdown is on!!!!).
We drove past Crazy Horse Memorial, which is a 563 foot work in progress since 1948.
