Day 23 – Tuesday 2 November

Just over the Oregon border in California – Santa Barbara, Ca (674 miles)

Day 2 of our 3 day Amtrak adventure.

Again, we spent the day in the observation car, starting off with a beautiful sunrise.

The views from the train continued to be ever-changing, from the “mothball fleet” of World war II ships in Suisun Bay, a glimpse of the Golden Gate Bridge across San Francisco Bay (no time for a photo), then the "salad bowl of the US" - the Salinas Valley, oil fields, and the California Men's Colony - a penitentiary housing some 'famous' inmates.

Then in the mid afternoon, our train departed San Luis Obispo for the spectacular coastal journey to Santa Barbara, passing Guadalupe, nearby which are the US launch sites for missiles and satellites.

We disembarked in Santa Barbara for the evening.
