Avignon, France (Day 3 of 8).
Orange, France.
After breakfast, we walked to Avignon’s Eglise Saint-Pierre,
which was built in 1358, on the remnants of an existing 7th Century
church.
We then walked to Gare d’Avignon Centre, where we had a
short train shuttle ride to Avignon TGV station, where we picked up our hire
car.
We then drove to the nearby city of Orange, which we spent
the afternoon walking around.
We visited the Theatre Antique d’Orange, one of the best
preserved of the Roman Empire’s theatres (built around 25 BC, for audiences of
9,000 people), with the ruins of the Temple by its side.
We then visited the nearby Musee d’Art & d’Histoire.
Bill then walked up Colline Saint Eutrope, for some great
views, whilst the others enjoyed some refreshments.
We then walked by the Hotel de Ville, before visiting the
nearby Cathedrale Notre Dame de Nazareth.
Finally, we stopped to look at Roman’s 1st
Century Arc de Triomphe.
On our return to Avignon, we stopped at Auchan - the largest
supermarket we have ever seen, with 59 manned check-out counters – to buy the food for a
delicious home-cooked dinner.
