Avignon, France (Day 5 of 8).
Saint-Remy de Provence / Villeneuve Les Avignon, France.
In the morning, we drove to nearby small and gorgeous capital
of the Alpilles, Saint-Remy de Provence. It was market day, so naturally Di and
Jo focused on shopping. There are several interesting buildings, including the Collegiale St Martin, with its
magnificent organ, and the house where Nostradamus was born in 1503.
We then had a delicious lunch at - http://www.brasseriesaintremy.com/
.
We then drove to the nearby pretty Monastere St Paul de
Mausole, the asylum which Vincent Van Gogh admitted himself to in 1889, during
which time he painted several of his famous paintings.
Nearby, we saw Les Antiques - the Mausoleum of Julii (30 BC)
and the Arch de Triomphe (20 AD) – and the archaeological site of Glanum, which
was inhabited from the 7th Century BC to 260 AD.
On our return to Avignon, we took a detour to another lovely
village, Villeneuve Les Avignon, which also provided a scenic view of Avignon.
