Avignon, France (Day 4 of 8).
Pont du Gard / Nimes, France.
In the morning, we drove to nearby Pont du Gard, the
magnificent Roman aqueduct, built around 19 BC.
We continued onto the lovely city of Nimes, which we walked around
until the early evening, admiring the architecture.
We toured the Roman coliseum, Les Arenas, built in the 1st
Century.
We also visited the Roman Temple, Maison Carree, which has
the Norman Foster-designed Carre d’Art (modern art) in the background.
We passed the Roman Porte d’Auguste, built in 15 BC.
We went up to the top of the Jardins de La Fontaine, where
we saw the Roman Toure Magne, built around 15 BC.
We then drove back to Avignon (1 hour) for a pasta dinner.
