Day 43 - Monday 14 May 2018

Canon City - Alamosa, Colorado

A long and scenic driving day.


We started the day by visiting - http://royalgorgebridge.com/about-the-park/ .


We then drove past Florence's Supermax prison - https://www.bop.gov/locations/institutions/flm/ , which houses the worst criminals in the US - http://www.businessinsider.com/famous-supermax-inmates-2012-8#dwight-york-real-name-dr-malachi-york-founded-the-united-nuwaubian-nation-he-was-convicted-in-2004-of-racketeering-and-child-molestation-and-is-scheduled-for-release-in-2122-6 .

We then drove along part of - https://www.myscenicdrives.com/drives/colorado/frontier-pathways-scenic-byway .


We stopped at - http://www.bishopcastle.org/ , where Bill climbed to the top!



We passed the pretty Lake Isabel.


We then stopped at Walsenburg for lunch.


Next we visited the Ludlow Monument - https://www.du.edu/ludlow/cfphoto.html , the memorial to the massacre of coal miners in 1914.



We then drove along part of - https://www.myscenicdrives.com/drives/colorado/highway-legends .





We then drove along part of - https://www.myscenicdrives.com/drives/colorado/los-caminos-antigous , including the Great Sand Dunes National Park - https://www.nps.gov/grsa/index.htm .






We then drove to, and climbed up to the - https://www.colorado.gov/pacific/costillacounty/shrine-stations-cross .


We then stopped outside the - https://www.museumtrail.org/jack-dempsey-museum.html .


We then drove to Alamosa for dinner and a well-deserved sleep.
