Day 44 - Tuesday 15 May 2018

Alamosa - Mesa Verde - Cortez, Colorado

Another long, scenic driving day, with some adventure and a lot of interest.

We departed Alamaosa in the morning, and west drove along - https://www.myscenicdrives.com/drives/colorado/tracks-across-borders .

We stopped and walked up to the lovely Treasury Falls.

We drove passed Chimney Rock National Monument.

We then drove along part of - https://www.myscenicdrives.com/drives/colorado/trail-of-the-ancients , and then visited the very interesting Mesa Verde National Park - https://www.nps.gov/meve/index.htm .

Our first stop was at the "Balcony House", the most adventurous cliff dwelling tour, which involved climbing a 10 metre ladder to enter the site. We then had to crawl through a 3.7 metre long, 0.46 metre wide tunnel, and climb 20 metres up an exposed cliff face, using 2 x 3 & 3.7 metre ladders and a series of stone steps - exhilarating!

We then drove around the "Cliff Palace" Loop and "Mesa Top" Loop, and observed further dwellings.

We then drove to Cortez for dinner and another well-deserved sleep.
